PA Crappie Camp 2012

May 21, 2012 - Larry Claypool
Hats off to Darl Black and all of the sponsors of the Pennsylvania Crappie Camp, held in mid-May at Pymatuning State Park in northwest PA. Two very good local fisheries were used for the camp - Pymatuning Lake and Shenango Lake. I fished Pymatuning on Day Two of the camp with guide Jimmy Lunsford. After the morning fog burned off Lunsford put us on fish in the southern end of the lake. After some success (it wasn't enough for Lunsford) we moved to another spot about 1/2 mile north. We stayed in that general area for most of the day, catching fish in spurts as Lunsford positioned his boat in search of some big crappie. I considered catching 9-12 inchers "very nice fish", but my guide was looking for 15+ fish. He did nail one that stretched the board at 15 1/2. For the day we caught nearly 90 crappie - keeping 20 for me to bring back to Ohio. Those were some good eating. Thank you Jimmy. As for other species, we caught a few walleye each, some smallmouth, bluegill and perch. What a fun day of fishing. Sponsors for this event included: Crawford County Convention and Visitor's Bureau (www.visitcrawford.org); Visit Mercer County (www.visitmercercountypa.com), PA; TTI-Blackmore (www.ttiblackmore.com); BnMPoles (www.bnmpoles.com) and Pennsylvania Pymatuning State Park.
