MANSFIELD, OH — The 2011 Ohio Taxidermy Championships, recently held in Mansfield, OH, was a huge success with nearly 200 taxidermists and over 220 mounts entered. The Ohio Taxidermists Association (O.T.A.), dedicated to the promotion of better taxidermy, held its show and competition on March 25-27 at the Mid-Ohio Conference Center in Mansfield. Several top awards were presented in different categories. The best of show award went to Jason Campbell of Herman, PA with his African Roller mount. Campbell also claimed one of the prestigious OTA State Champion Medallion Awards for the same mount. Approximately 700 people attended the public display portion of the show on Saturday. “The level of artistry and originality of the entries was outstanding,” according to Ed Piaskowski of the OTA. “The public display will again be open to the public in 2012. The whitetail deer speed mounting contest was a rousing success with approximately 100 spectators cheering on the contestants and voting for the best mount. Toby Burdette (OH) was the winner.” Qualifying for a State Championship award requires entering in the Masters division. The prestigious award includes a special medallion hand sculpted for each category by Cary Cochran, renowned Ohio sculptor and taxidermist. “The one-of-a-kind State Champion Medallion Awards are getting a lot of attention throughout the U.S. and are attracting quite a few out-of-state taxidermists to Ohio to compete for them,” said Piaskowski. Competitors came from other states including; Indiana, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Michigan. In fact, of the six top state champion awards only one winner was from Ohio and four states were represented (OH, PA, WV and Michigan).
