Possum Lodge Offers Unique Hunter’s/Vacation Lodge Experience

November 24, 2011
Ohio Valley Outdoors

What started out as a retirement get-away cabin, has evolved into a deluxe, pristine hunter's/vacation lodge. Possum Lodge, located in Freeport, OH in the heart of 'big buck' country, is a luxury cabin that sits on a unique 64-acre plot between Piedmont Lake and Clendening Lake.

For hunters Possum Lodge is a great location (Harrison County, OH) for quality deer, turkey and grouse - all fair chase. For fisherman it rests in the heart of many of Ohio's finest destinations. For vacationers it's a perfect place to get away for a week or weekend. There's walking trails, lots of birds and wildlife to enjoy near the cabin or close by at one of several Ohio state parks and preserves.

For the dedicated hunter, there are seven treestands scattered in prime hunting areas around the property. Proprietors Nancy and Chuck Slusarczyk have added two deer feeders and a few food plots on the mostly wooded land that's perfect for deer hunting. There's lots of natural mast crops for deer. "There's mostly white oak trees and good natural food for deer. There's also a bottom 10 acre area with a valley that offers a funnel for deer," said Nancy Slusarczyk.

The fine decor is apparent as guests step into the great room at Possum Lodge.

To improve the hunting possibilities at Possum Lodge, the property is located directly between two public hunting areas (Clendening - 4,000 acres and Jockey Hollow Wildlife Area - 3,600 acres). So, during peak hunting seasons, deer and turkey are moving about and transverse Slusarczyk's property. The Egypt Valley Wildlife Area is a 20-minute drive south.

For hunters not familiar with the Harrison County and the East-Southeast Ohio region, this is a well-known area for producing big bucks. The Possum Lodge property is also located a short drive from Salt Fork State Park, another Buckeye State favorite hunting and fishing destination.

Possum Lodge is within a two hour drive of both Columbus and Cleveland, OH. Pittsburgh, PA and Wheeling, WV are even closer.

Nancy Slusarczyk says Possum Lodge is available to rent all year round. It's obviously well booked during the hunting seasons (call her for availability). They rent weekly, daily or by weekends (weekend rates are higher) with winter rates lower. Guests are also welcomed on holidays. Pets are welcome too.

"This is a great get-away for people. We offer luxury in a great location. People have asked us 'how close is the next cabin.'" I tell them 'there are no other cabins'. We're very secluded," said Slusarczyk.

The two-story Possum Lodge sleeps eight comfortably. It features a wood burning fireplace, satellite TV, dining area, modern kitchen, master bedroom, full bath and full laundry. There's also a private bar located on a covered rear porch of the cabin that includes a gas grill for outdoor cooking. It's dubbed 'The Drop Tine Tavern' (named after the drop tine deer mount located in the room. Chuck Slusarczyk harvested the nine-point buck shortly after purchasing the property in 2005.

Nancy Slusarczyk said her and her husband had been vacationing in the Harrison County area since 1992 and dreamed of owning a cabin there someday. In 2005 they purchased the 64-acre property and began building their dream vacation cabin. A series of events, and some family health issues, led the couple to decide to open up the luxury cabin for others to enjoy.
