New Bait Shop Opens on Little Beaver Creek

LISBON, OH - In an area where fisherman have a variety of angling opportunities to catch bass, catfish, trout, crappie, walleye and more, there's always been a problem of easily obtaining live bait. One dedicated fisherman has decided to ease that problem. Doug Ketchum, of Lisbon, OH, recently opened a small bait shop - Ketchum If You Can Bait Shop - on Leslie Road, along the north fork of Little Beaver Creek. The shop is located near Beaver Creek State Park.

Ketchum, a longtime pursuer of catfish, said he saw a need for a bait shop in the area and decided to 'tackle' the chore of operating his own business. He is assisted by his wife, Tanya, and his in-laws, whose property the shop lies on at 12477 Leslie Road, one mile north of Beaver Local High School.

Ketchum If You Can Bait Shop features live bait, including: chubs, fathead and golden shiner minnows, night crawlers, leeches, maggots and wax worms. They also offer Ketchum's Killer Katfish bait, a homemade doughball for catfish. The shop also offers some light tackle and supplies. More items will be added soon, including crawdads.

"We can also order things we don't have in stock. Our minnows are delivered each Wednesday but if we run low we can always get more," said Ketchum. "We hope to get crawdads soon. I've had a lot of people ask for them. I have a different supplier for those. We're just waiting until they're ready."

Ketchum said he's obviously learning about the bait business as he goes. He plans on keeping his inventory in check to assure his bait is fresh. "You've got to move the bait, but you can't not have fish. Timing has a lot to do with it," said Ketchum, who works full time with the Columbiana County Highway Department. "This is a lot more involved than I'd thought, but we don't have a lot of money in it and no big overhead. "

The bait shop - open seven days a week - is located 1/4 mile east on Leslie Road from state Route 7. The hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday-Thursday; 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday; 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday. "We're flexible," said Tanya Ketchum. "My parents live right here and we live just a few miles up the road."
