Our Pitchman Would Be Proud

October 22, 2012
By Larry Claypool - OVO Editor , Ohio Valley Outdoors

If you visited an outdoor sports show in the past several years there's a good chance someone had asked you, "would you like a free copy of our magazine?"

Regardless of your answer, Dale Leoni most likely stopped you in your tracks. He would reach out and hand you a complimentary copy of the magazine. That didn't actually mean you were getting the magazine though. You didn't get off that easy. You had to listen to his "schpeel", as I would call it.

If you didn't listen to Leoni's sales pitch he would pull back the free copy. If you did stick around there was a good change he'd get you to subscribe to our magazine, or renew your current subscription, even if it didn't expire soon. He'd throw in a free pair of sunglasses or camo hat too. A tough salesman he was.

Unfortunately we lost our best salesman - our top pitchman - on October 11, 2012. Leoni died suddenly while vacationing with his wife, Dee, aboard a cruise ship in the Bahamas.

Our sales team will never be the same. And neither will the shows.

So, in the future if you're asked if you'd like to have a free copy of our magazine, just smile, pretend you're listening to a good "schpeel" and subscribe to a fine magazine. Our pitchman would be proud, and we thank you.

And thank you Dale Leoni. You will be missed.
