Public Input Sought for New Wildlife Education Building and Fish House at State Fairgrounds

November 24, 2015

COLUMBUS, OH - The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) invites the public to review and comment about draft plans for proposed improvements to ODNR Division of Wildlife's facilities at the Ohio State Fairgrounds. The proposed updates will provide the public and staff a climate-controlled indoor shooting facility and fish house that will allow for safe and enjoyable shooting and angling experiences. Public comments will be accepted for a 30-day period, which ends Dec. 23, 2015.

For decades, the ODNR Division of Wildlife has used several buildings at the Ohio State Fairgrounds to provide shooting and angler education opportunities. These structures are in need of repair and updating so the division may continue to provide safe and enjoyable experiences for the public. Expansion of these buildings is also needed to increase customer capacity and decrease wait times for the activities. Broken and antiquated equipment has hampered the division's ability to provide a safe shooting and angling environment for customers, staff, and volunteers.

The proposed plan includes the removal of existing structures and replacement with an indoor air gun and archery range. A new fish house will be a fish filet demonstration area and check-in area for youth who wish to take home their catch. The plans were prepared by Schorr Architects, Inc. in consideration of ODNR Division of Wildlife needs. A portion of the funding for this project is through the Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration Act, administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Copies may also be obtained from the ODNR Division of Wildlife, Attn: Jonathan Sorg, Wildlife Federal Aid Coordinator, 2045 Morse Road, G-2, Columbus, Ohio, 43229, (614) 265-6720. Written comments should be sent to Jonathan Sorg by mail, email: or via fax to (614) 263-8144.
